Hawksburn and Malvern!

Today I have made my own history. I travelled all the way to Hawksburn and Malvern. Some of you reading this might live in Australia but not even know where those two places are. Yeah they are actually very far away. I went there to meet three good friends whom I have grown close to and associate closely now with any of my business interests.

This has been my first time travelling on the train and bus for such a long journey since I have got back to Melb. Its been interesting so far! Got to experience that feeling again or being in total freedom, can travel and journey as far as you'd like. No uni or no activity now. Total freedom.

I met up with the three of them, Donald, Edward and Eugene and discussed from 11am to 6pm about EIC, Kenjisan and what we have been up to on our holidays. So much things to discuss yet so short time! In the end a very favourable outcome was achieved. The three of them had agreed to join our partnership. That has been a dream for me, can't believe that 3 people I really want to join my partnership did so.

With new members pouring in, I estimate new members will be about 6. Which is 3/4 of our current 8 member team! Wow..God has put alot of blessing on us!

I love melb now!! Especially the weather and people. I still miss my msia friends, you know who you are. And those who I worked with in my internship, if you ever managed to find my blog(!) miss you too. Love my dad n stepmom n sis. Appreciate very much kelvin, thean, and ming fung now. Feeling content with life today.

How my friend met Orlando Bloom's father

The other day we were in church in Malaysia, and we all had a class gathering. Usually in church, we meet in classes for youth groups and we have an adult or two to head a class. The head of our class has been Uncle Brian and Auntie May, two lovely people I will never forget for the rest of my life. They recently experienced something special, they met Orlando Bloom's father at an education fair!

Orlando Bloom's father is actually principal of a university in England. And he was at the Education Fair in Malaysia. Uncle Brian and Aunty May, not knowing who the man was, started to chat with him, and here's how their conversation went:-

Man: My son has to travel alot.
Man: Its ok if your son doesnt do well...for my son during his school days, they used to call him blooming idiot.

Man: now My son is doing quite well.
Auntie May: Oh where does he work?
Man: Hollywood.

Auntie May: Wow..What does he do? Filming?
Man: Haha...acting.

Auntie May: So he must want to be famous.
father: Oh he is quite famous.

Man: They pay my son alot.
Auntie May: How much?
Man: Millions of dollars each year.

(starts to wonder who the son is)

Auntie May: So who is your son actually?
Man: Orlando Bloom.
*shocks!*

And that was the story of how they met Orlando Bloom's father coincidentally.

How melb went so far

Hi my readers once again. Been 10 days since I have flown to Melb. The last time I blogged was one of my last days in msia. Alot has happened since I have come to melb once again, so this post shall be dedicated to what has happened over that period of time.

My dad stayed with my sis and me for a week here in melb. It was truly enjoyable. We did whole heaps of shopping for necessities, restock up some items in the house and went out for dinner a few times. We even had a steak dinner at home cooked by my dad. We bought the ingredients together. Even though alot of money was spent, it was worth it because we needed those supplies and food to last for the rest of the year.

I am already getting used to the lifestyle here in melb, which I have to say, is quite different to that of Malaysia. In my hometown, you get a maid who will wash everything for you and who will cook you dinner. Over here, things are a little bit more independent because you have to do everything yourself. The value of my time increases here because I have to do more things and I still have the same amount of time. So I guess you can regard that as an irony. I can't afford a maid here, but I can back in msia. But in msia my times is worth much less than over here in melb.

The partnership has been growing steadily in terms of profit. And alot is going to happen over the next 2 months. I am really excited. Our two holdings in two very special companies continue and I am proud of their performance, even though it is such a short length of time to be measured against. So, it makes investing seem easy, but I'm sure it is because I did some things right that it is that way. And I shouldn't change what I did previously. What I can do is identify error and perfect it. It is very true in investing that once you protect your downside, the upside will take care of itself. Like in chess too.

Uni will be starting soon in early march. Another year of exciting happenings. And I feel that it is going to be so. However, it will be different to 2007. The last year was more of introduction and getting used to things. This year, becoming more seasoned to everything, is a year of growth and seizing opportunities. I have no excuse to give any lesser results than last year. I am very fortunate though and I express my thanks to God for giving me alot of blessings last year. Particularly in meeting Kelvin, who has been my buddy in so many competitions last year and achieving outstanding results. Together we have got best first year team, 2nd place in a sharemarket competition and are current semi-finalists in a business plan competition. I don't plan to look at it for complacency but more of a motivation to do even better in 2008!

Hopefully I will also get to experience new things and that my enthusiasm for business and investing will not dampen because of time, but increase ever more. That's my hope for 2008 and that all my friends alongside me will continue to excel as well. Remember, we have to strive to be better each year than the year before! That is the true growth. Do not become complacent just because last year was well, which was a particularly good and eventful year for me. If we stay stagnant, other people who work hard will enjoy the fruit of their own hard work. If you work hard, you will enjoy that fruit too.

The sharemarket in general has been the most whooping month ever in January. It was the 2nd worst month since the fall in october 1987. However, I am proud to say that, even though choppy it was, the partnership emerged as a clear winner from that slump as we bought in the fall. We are in the green now and hopefully will continue to be so in the future as we ride out more volatility predicted to come.

The last night in KL for a long time

I haven't been blogging awhile so bear with me yeh. I will try to summarise everything in this post of what I have been doing since I've last blogged.

My time at Affin has ended. I ended my internship last week on a very sad/joyful tone. It was sad saying goodbye to everyone I love there, but you know, there was a glimmer of hope every time there is a bye. It is because it is not bye forever, but until the next time I see you. They were very nice to me and I appreciate their kindness. They even went so far as to buy me a cake and celebrate when I came to visit yesterday. In the end I got paid for my time spent there at Affin.

I had 3 farewells from 3 different group of friends whom I cherish and love. It was for 3 consecutive days, right until the last day I left KL. I feel blessed to have that many friends whom I have hopefully left a mark in each of their lives. And that may I be like an "angel" to them in the future if ever they are in need in whatsoever way.

Saying goodbye to my house and my room ain't easy. I won't be living in it for another 8-9 months perhaps. I love my room here but still think it is too big. Could be much nicer if it were smaller. I will also miss my big rottweiler dog here, Willie. Miss you willie if you can read this.

But most of all, I will miss my friends in KL. Love you all, if you are reading this. KL has been a very interesting journey in this chapter of my life and you all have made it ever so different for me. The times we spent in Pavillion, lunches in KL, meet ups after work, birthday parties for two good friends, meet up after school time, visiting each other, CCF at church, and last but not least sitting in a friend's car who drives really fast without speed limit.

So, my holidays have truly been enjoyable and I look forward to the next set of holidays when I will turn 21! I am still 19 going to be 20 this year. Hopefuly 21 means progress in my life and progress in everyone else's life. Do not look back, for we do not live in the past. I also want to say throughout it all, God has been with me every single step of the way. Especially my experience at Affin was an exceptional one. And with all the turmoil in the sharemarkets already in the 3rd week of 2008, I am sure 2008 will be a good one.

Internet crisis - resolved

Yesterday after coming home from an outing with 3 good friends, Chan, Jerm and Heng, I found out that my internet had been crashed. It all started out somewhat innocently the previous night.

My dad was working on the modem line which was cut off - again - due to overheating of the line. Our line is sensitive when internet is being used, fax is being used, and someone is on the phone using the same line. The result is the wire will be overheated and burnt out. But fortunately it was easy to repair and my dad was doing the repairing.

Usually before he starts to repair, I would have to turn off the modem. But I turned off the modem when I found out he was doing the repairing. And my dad did the repairing late at night. I figured everything was ok even though I turned it off during the repairing and so I went off to sleep. The next day, it never occurred to me that I had to turn on the modem back.

So when I came home after the outing, I found the modem turned on but the DSL light blinking. The problem is that there is no connection. So being the analyst I am, I called streamyx alot of times even in the early hours of the morning and slowly cancelled out one by one the sources of the problem.

Amongst my other efforts were filing two reports with streamyx, checking connections with other laptops, finding the password of streamyx which we had lost, finding for the router password and going to Subang Parade to consult professional help.

But in the end, it was God who saved the day. I came home from Subang Parade today to find that my internet was working. All of a sudden. Things usually don't turn out the way you expect them to be. Sometimes we just have to diligently seek what we want and let God do the rest. We can be sure He is with us working too. So the internet problem is solved. A little bit more problems and I can be a technician myself already.

The wait begins

Today has been an exciting day indeed. Controversial too if you asked me. Today is monday. Today I'm not working. Something fishy with that? Yes because I skipped work today.

I woke up in the morning freezing because air con + fan = too much for me. The previous night I was in Kuantan staying over at my grandpa's. Suddenly yesterday night I was exposed to the winds of the Himalaya's(equivalent to). Hence, I was sick in the morning. I had to go see a doctor.

The other reason is that news was wide spread in malaysian media that US stocks had tumbled their biggest one day drop for over a year. Since throughout 2007 I have been looking at the sharemarket almost every day, the biggest single drop in a single day have sparked my interest. It was time for share hunting.

And I did buy some shares today, at what I believed was a bargain price. Not many people would have agreed but I believed it so. The most important thing is to wait now. Wait and do nothing, and be sure that I will succeed. Its true. Waiting and doing nothing after buying a great company is the key to success. If anything, only add up on your holdings if the share price beckons it.

So why controversial? Because I skipped a day at work to buy shares. Perhaps not also, because I was sick. Yes, I am well now. Praise God for that. Tomorrow another day begins. May it be the best.

Market giving good prices

Lately the sharemarket in Australia has been performing poorly. In May 2007, when I started investing the level was around 6400. 3 months later, the level was around 5500. 2 weeks later, the value was 6800. Fast forward 2 months later and we're at 6300. This is how rocky and curvy the sharemarket is. Is it a good time to be buying shares now?

One thing I am glad is that I have been continuously doing reading the last few weeks and with that alot of knowledge I have gained. Perhaps I could channel it to materialise it as profits. I have already made a stand, with a commodity. As for stocks, still looking for those with strong brands and consumer awareness. Perhaps Australia doesn't have that sort of stocks compared with elsewhere in the world.

Note to consider, why invest in Australia when investing overseas provides higher returns? One answer: because Australian companies have the benefit of imputation for individual local investors. So tax-wise we are advantaged. The overall answer: maybe its not good to invest in Australia.
